How to use it

  1. 1

  2. 2

For each, name the protagonist, what they want and what stands in the way.

  3. 3

Turn the strongest into a logline with the logline generator, then test it on a friend.

  4. 4

Rough out the turning points with a beat sheet before you write any pages.

  5. 5

Change anything that does not feel like yours: setting, job, era, ending.

What makes a good movie idea?

A good movie idea puts a specific person under pressure in a situation that forces them to act, and it can be explained in a sentence. The best movie ideas also suggest scenes: you hear the premise and you can already picture the trailer, the first act break and the climax.

Look for a strong central question, an active hero, clear stakes and something the audience has not quite seen before. Freshness usually comes from the combination, a familiar genre in an unfamiliar world, or an ordinary job pushed to an extreme.

How do you come up with movie script ideas?

Start with what you know that most people do not: a job, a place, a community, a fear. Ask what would happen if the worst or strangest version of it arrived on an ordinary Tuesday. Many of the ideas on this page come from that move: an appraiser, a night auditor, a court interpreter.

Then add a clock and a cost. A premise becomes a movie when someone has to act before a deadline and stands to lose something they love.

What are good film ideas for a low budget?

Filter by Micro budget. Those ideas lean on one or two locations, a small cast and tension that comes from people rather than effects. Contained thrillers, single location horror and two hander dramas are the classic low budget shapes because every scene can be shot in a place you can borrow.

Indie ideas need a little more: a boat, a small town, a handful of sets. Studio ideas assume scale, such as crowds, disasters, effects or big set pieces, and are better for a spec script than a first self funded shoot.

Are there more ideas for one genre?

Yes. Three genres have their own pages with 52 more original premises each and craft notes for that genre: horror movie ideas, fantasy story ideas and romance story ideas. The ideas there do not repeat the ones on this page.

Writing for television instead? The TV show ideas page lists 60 series concepts, each with the engine that keeps it running episode after episode.

Can I use these movie ideas for my own script?

Yes. Every idea here was written for this page and is free to use, adapt or ignore. Ideas themselves are generally not protected, only the way they are expressed, so what will make the story yours is the characters, the scenes and the voice you bring to it.

Questions writers ask

Where can I find good movie ideas?

Start with the 123 original ideas on this page, filtered by genre and budget. Then look at your own job, town and fears for the details that make an idea specific.

What are the best movie ideas for a first feature?

Ideas you can shoot in one or two locations with a small cast. Filter by Micro budget for contained thrillers, horror and dramas that do not need effects.

Where can I find romance story ideas?

Filter this page to Romance, then see the romance story ideas page for 52 more premises, each built around a reason two people keep meeting and a reason they should not fall for each other.

How do I turn a movie idea into a logline?

Press Turn into a logline on any card. It opens the free logline generator with the premise filled in, so you can draft and grade a one sentence pitch.

Are these movie ideas copyrighted?

They were written for this page and you are free to use them. Ideas are not usually protected on their own; the finished script you write is.
