What goes on a screenplay title page?

Very little, and that is the point. The title sits about a third of the way down, centred, in caps. Under it, a credit line such as Written by, then the writer’s name. If the story comes from a book, an article or a life story, a Source line like Based on the novel by Jane Doe goes underneath.

Contact details go in the bottom left corner: an email and a phone number, or your manager or agent if you have one. A draft line or date can go bottom right, though many writers leave dates off spec scripts so a script never looks old.

Everything is Courier 12 point, the same as the rest of the script. No artwork, no logos, no fancy fonts, no quotes, no copyright or WGA registration numbers. Readers take all of those as signs of a first timer.

Written by or screenplay by: which credit do I use?

Written by is the standard credit for an original screenplay. Screenplay by is common when the story came from another source, paired with a Based on line. Teleplay by is the TV version. Story by is used when someone else came up with the story and you wrote the script.

For writing teams, the ampersand matters. Ana Ruiz & Sam Cole means a team that wrote together. Ana Ruiz and Sam Cole means two writers who worked on it separately. That is how the Writers Guild reads credits, so use the one that is true.

Is a cover page the same as a title page?

They are all the same page. Some contests and fellowships ask for no name on the title page at all, so readers judge the script blind. Check the rules before you submit, and simply leave the writer and contact fields empty for those.

Questions writers ask

How do you format a screenplay title page?

Title in caps, centred about a third of the way down, then the credit line and your name under it. Contact details bottom left, optional draft or date bottom right. All in Courier 12.

What goes on a screenplay cover page?

Only the title, the credit and writer’s name, any based on line, and your contact details. No images, logos or copyright notices.

Is a screenplay front page the same as a title page?

Yes. Title page, cover page and front page all mean the same single page.

Is there a screenplay title page template for Word or Google Docs?

Yes. Download the Word template, open it in Word, Pages or Google Docs, and type over the title, name and contact lines. The layout and Courier 12 are already set.

Should I put a date on my title page?

It is optional. Many writers leave it off spec scripts so the script never looks dated.

Does the title page count as page one?

No. The title page has no number, and the first page of the script itself is page one.

Can I make a title page for Final Draft or Fountain?

Yes. Download the Fountain file and open it in any Fountain app, or paste its lines at the top of your script. Final Draft can import Fountain too.
