How long should a pitch deck be?

Short. The ten slides here are the usual core, and many decks stop there. Producers and financiers see a lot of decks, and the deck decides whether they read the script, so every slide has to earn its place. If a slide repeats something an earlier one said, cut it.

A series deck usually adds a slide on the season arc and future seasons. A feature deck for financiers may add a page on comparable films and audience. Start with these ten and add only what your reader needs.

What makes a pitch deck example work?

Specificity. The example deck below never says "a thrilling journey". It names the ship, the storm, the deadline and the twist. Every slide answers a question a producer has: what is it, who is it about, why would anyone watch it, and can this team make it.

Images matter more than words on the world and title slides. Use a few strong reference frames you have the right to use, or your own photography. Avoid a collage of famous film stills: it is common, and it makes your film look like someone else’s.

Do you need a pitch deck to sell a script?

Not always. Many writers get read from a logline and a query letter alone. A deck helps most when you are packaging a project yourself: attaching a director or actor, raising money, or applying to a lab. Make sure the script is ready first, because a good deck gets the script read and the script has to hold up.

What does a film pitch deck look like?

    The Last Crossing

Forty passengers. One storm. Someone on board is not who they say.

    Written by Mara Quinn (fictional)

    The Last Crossing1

    1. Title

  2. Logline

When a storm strands the last night ferry mid channel, a recovering alcoholic deckhand has until dawn to find which passenger is smuggling a kidnapped child, before the captain she once got fired makes her the suspect.

    The Last Crossing2

    2. Logline

  3. Synopsis

Nell Varga works the night ferry because nobody else will hire her. Tonight a storm kills the engines halfway across, and a frightened girl slips Nell a note: help me. By the time Nell finds the cabin, the girl is gone and the passenger list says she never boarded. With the radio down and the captain convinced Nell is drinking again, she has to search a crippled ship, decide which of forty strangers she can trust, and keep herself sober long enough to be believed. At the midpoint she finds the girl, and learns the girl was never kidnapped: she is the witness someone on board was sent to silence.

  5. Tone and comps

Tense, wet, claustrophobic, with one moment of grace

    Comparable titles

A storm bound locked room thriller in the vein of classic single location suspense

    Why

A single location and a small cast keep the budget contained while the storm and the ticking clock keep the scale big on screen.

    5. Tone and comps

  6. The world

A tired car ferry, mid channel, at night. Rust, sodium light, a bar that never closes and a car deck full of shadows. The storm turns the ship into a maze that moves.

    Visual approach

Handheld in the corridors, locked off on the bridge. Sodium orange against storm blue. The sea is mostly sound until the last act.

  7. Why now

Stories about people nobody believes have never been more relevant. Nell is a protagonist audiences root for because she has to earn back the right to be heard while saving someone else.

Pitch deck examples by genre

Three short sample pitch decks for made up films, showing how the key slides change with the genre. The projects, budgets and people are invented; the shape is what to copy.

Micro budget horror

Night Feed

Logline
A father doing the 3am feeds alone notices his newborn’s eyes follow something across the empty nursery, every night, a little closer to the cot.
Why now
Every new parent knows the fear of the night shift. This film turns that exhaustion into a question the audience takes home: what are they looking at?
Look and sound
One house, practical light from a baby monitor and a hallway lamp. The scares live in sound: the hum of the monitor and a second breath that should not be there.
Production
Single location, four main cast, an 18 day shoot. Every scare is practical and achievable on a small crew.

Indie romantic comedy

The Vineyard Accounts

Logline
A city accountant sent to close a failing family vineyard falls for the stubborn winemaker trying to save it, one harvest before the bank calls in the loan.
Tone
Warm, quick and grown up. The comedy comes from spreadsheets meeting soil, the romance from two people who are both right about the numbers.
Characters
Nell, who has never failed an audit and never had a holiday. Rafa, who has never read a contract and never left the valley.
Audience
Adults who want a romance with stakes they recognize: work, family and the fear of starting again.

Studio thriller

Grid Line

Logline
When a heatwave blackout hits a coastal city, a utility lineworker has twelve hours to restore power to a hospital while the people who caused it watch through her own cameras.
Set pieces
A substation fire, a climb up a failing pylon in a storm and a final race through flooded tunnels with the hospital’s backup generator running dry.
Why it travels
A blue collar hero, a ticking clock and a city in the dark play in any market without translation.
The ask
Seeking a producing partner and a director with large scale practical action experience.
