Old Fashioned Names That Fell Out of Use
Old fashioned names are the ones that topped US birth records in the 1900s to 1930s and then all but vanished. Mildred, Ethel, Gladys and Bertha for women, Clarence, Fred and Earl for men. Every name below was top 100 then and sits outside the top 1000 in both the 2010s and 2020s.

For writers: names that date a character
Time markers reached the top 100 in the 1900s to the 1930s, had their best decade ever there, and rank below #300 today. Traps are today’s top 100 names that were outside the top 1000, or missing from the records, throughout the 1900s to the 1930s.

How to use it
- 1
Scan the ranked table for the 1900s to the 1930s and sort it by rank, births or where a name sits today. Copy the list if you want it.
- 2
Use the generator to pair real first names from that decade with common US surnames. Tap a half to keep it and reroll the rest.
- 3
Check the anachronism traps before you commit, so a modern name does not give your period character away.
How did we decide a name is old fashioned?
We did not pick names by feel. We took every name that reached the top 100 for girls or boys in any decade from the 1900s to the 1930s, then kept only the ones ranked below #1000 in both the 2010s and the 2020s Social Security data. That is a fall of hundreds or thousands of places, measured, not guessed.
Betty is the sharpest drop on the girls’ side: #2 in the 1930s, #1,138 in the 2020s. Mildred was #6 in the 1910s and is #1,942 now. On the boys’ side the list is shorter, because many men’s names from that time, like John, William and James, never left.
Why do old lady names feel old?
Because the women who carry them were born a century ago. A girl named Gladys or Bertha in 1905 would be a grandmother by the 1960s, so a whole generation met those names on grandmothers, great aunts and teachers. When a name stops being given to babies, it ages with the people who already have it.
That is useful on the page. Name a young character Ethel and the reader assumes a joke or a family story. Name an 80 year old Ethel in a story set in the 1980s and nobody blinks, because she would have been born around 1905, when Ethel was a top 20 name.
Which old fashioned names are coming back?
Not these. The list here is the names that stayed gone. Some names from the same years did return, like Hazel, Violet and Eleanor, and they have their own page on vintage names that came back, measured the same way from the rank history.
Names by era
Questions writers ask
What are some old fashioned female names?
Betty, Shirley, Mildred, Doris, Ethel, Gladys, Edna, Bertha and Gertrude were all top 30 girls’ names between the 1900s and 1930s, and all sit outside the US top 1000 today.
What are some old fashioned male names?
Clarence, Fred, Ralph, Earl, Herbert, Elmer, Herman and Floyd were top 60 boys’ names in the 1900s to 1930s and are outside the top 1000 in the 2010s and 2020s.
What are old lady names?
Names that were common for girls born roughly 1900 to 1939 and are rare for babies now, so most people met them on older women. Mildred, Ethel, Gladys, Bertha and Myrtle are typical.
What was the most popular girl’s name in the early 1900s?
Mary. It was the #1 girls’ name in the US every year from 1900 to 1939. For boys, John held #1 until 1923 and Robert took over from 1924 to 1939.
Is this list from US or British records?
US. Every rank comes from US Social Security Administration baby name data. British naming followed different patterns, so treat this as American usage.
