Dialogue Generator for Screenwriters

This free dialogue generator writes a short scene between two characters in proper screenplay format. Give it the characters, the situation and what is going on underneath, and it plays the subtext instead of saying it outright. Use it to break a blank page, test a scene idea, or hear two characters talk.

How to use it

  1. 1

Name the two characters, with a few words on who each one is.

  2. 2

Describe the situation, then add the subtext: what they are not saying.

  3. 3

Pick a genre and tone, generate the scene, then copy it as Fountain into your script.

What makes good screenplay dialogue?

Short lines that sound spoken, characters who want something from each other, and subtext. People rarely say exactly what they mean, especially when it matters. A couple arguing about the dishes are often arguing about something else, and the scene is better when the audience feels that without being told.

What is subtext in dialogue?

The meaning under the words. If you tell the generator that one character is about to leave and has not said so, it writes a scene about something small that carries that weight. That gap between what is said and what is meant is where most good dialogue lives.

How is dialogue formatted in a screenplay?

The character’s name in capitals above their lines, centred toward the middle of the page, with the dialogue in a narrower column under it. A parenthetical in brackets can sit between the name and the line when it changes how the line is read. The generator gives you all of this, and copies as Fountain any screenwriting app can open.

Is it a random dialogue generator?

It can be. Leave the subtext and tone blank and give it a loose situation, and every run plays out differently. Fill the fields in and it stays closer to your idea. Either way, rewrite the lines in your characters’ voices before they go in a draft.

Questions writers ask

Is this dialogue generator free?

Yes. No signup, up to 15 AI runs a day, and we do not keep what you type.

Can I paste the scene into my screenplay?

Yes. Copy it as Fountain and paste it into ScriptLix Studio, Highland, Fade In, WriterDuet or any app that reads Fountain.

How long is the scene?

Short: about 8 to 16 beats, most of them lines of dialogue, usually under a page.

How do I write better dialogue myself?

Give each character a clear want in the scene, cut every line that only explains, and read it out loud. If you would not say it, neither would they.
