Superhero Name Generator: Hero Names by Power

A superhero name generator gives you a codename that sounds like it belongs on a cover. This one builds hero names from seven power themes and four formats, from Captain style titles to one word codenames, and can pair each with a secret identity. Famous hero names are filtered out automatically.

How to use it

  1. 1

Pick a power theme: elemental, tech, cosmic, shadow, speed, mind or nature, or leave it mixed.

  2. 2

Choose a format: title plus name, The something, one word, or a codename with a secret identity.

  3. 3

Lock the names you like, reroll the rest, then star, copy or share the list.

How does the hero name generator work?

Each power theme has its own word banks: openings like Volt, Umbra or Briar, endings like strike, step or heart, and full nouns like Riptide or Overgrowth. The generator combines them in four shapes, the ones superhero names have used for decades: a rank or title, The plus a noun, a single compound word, and a codename with a civilian name behind it.

Every codename is checked against a list of well known comic, film and TV heroes and villains. A match is thrown away, so you get names that sound right without borrowing someone else’s character.

What makes a good superhero name?

It tells you the power or the attitude in one beat. A speed hero called Tailwind or a mind hero called Hindsight needs no explanation. Short beats clever: two syllables survive a fight scene, six do not.

Think about who chose it. A teenager names herself something loud. A soldier gets a callsign. A hero the press named might hate it. That choice is character, and it gives you a scene.

Should the secret identity name match the hero?

Usually not. The civilian name should sound ordinary, because the point is that nobody connects the two. The contrast is part of the story: the quiet name at the office, the loud one on the rooftop. Use the secret identity format to get both at once.

Can I check a hero name is not already taken?

The generator removes well known names, but no list covers every comic ever printed. Before you publish, search the name with the word superhero, and check trademark databases if you plan to sell merchandise.
