In short

To make a storyboard online, add a frame for each shot, sketch in it or add your own image, and note the shot size, angle, camera move, action, dialogue and duration. This free storyboard creator lets you reorder frames, print 2, 3 or 6 per page and save the board as a PDF, with your notes saved in your browser.

  1. Frame 1

    1
  2. Frame 2

  3. Frame 3

3 of 60 frames. Text saves in this browser; sketches and images stay on screen until you close the tab and are never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. 1

Name the scene, then fill in the first frame: draw a quick sketch or add a reference image, and set the shot size, angle and move.

  2. 2

Type the action and any dialogue or sound under each frame, add frames as you go, and use the arrows to reorder them.

  3. 3

Pick 2, 3 or 6 frames per page and tap Print or save PDF, then choose Save as PDF in the print dialog.

Shot sizes on a storyboard, and what each one shows

CodeShot sizeWhat fills the frame
ECUExtreme close upOne detail: the eyes, a hand on a trigger, a word on a screen
CUClose upA face, from about the chin to the top of the head
MSMedium shotA person from about the waist up, close enough for expression and gesture
WSWide shotThe whole body and some of the place around it
EWSExtreme wide shotThe place itself, with people small inside it

What should go in each storyboard frame?

The picture shows composition: where the camera is, how big the subject is, and which way people look and move. The notes cover what a still cannot: the shot size, the angle, any camera move, the action, the line or sound that plays over it, and roughly how long it holds.

Stick figures are fine. A director of photography reads a clear arrow and a horizon line faster than a polished drawing.

How is this different from the storyboard template?

The storyboard template prints a fixed grid of empty panels in any aspect ratio, for sketching by hand. The creator is for building the board on screen: frames you can add, delete and reorder, sketches and images inside them, and notes that print under each one.

Where are my frames saved?

The text in every frame saves in this browser as you type, so a reload keeps your board. Sketches and images stay in the open tab only and are never uploaded, so print or save the PDF before you close it.

Questions writers ask

Is this storyboard creator free?

Yes. No account and no watermark. Build the board, then print it or save it as a PDF.

Can I draw in the frames?

Yes. Tap Draw on any frame and sketch with a finger, pen or mouse. You can also add your own photo or reference image instead.

Can I change the order of frames?

Yes. Use the up and down arrows on each frame, or add a new frame right after any existing one.

How many frames fit on a page?

Pick 2, 3 or 6 frames per page. Two or three leave room for notes on action scenes; six suits quick dialogue boards.

Do my images get uploaded?

No. They stay in your browser tab. Only the typed notes are saved, and only on this device.
