Storyline Generator: Build a Story in Five Beats

A storyline generator gives you the spine of a story in five beats: who it is about, what they want, what stands in the way, the turn that changes everything, and how it ends. Pick a genre and the kind of ending you want, lock the beats you like, and reroll the rest until the story clicks.

Storyline

A son who stayed behind to run the family hardware store wants to reopen the dance hall where his parents met. But the town has already decided what kind of person he is. Then the brother he blamed for everything turns out to have been protecting him. In the end, he forgives the one who hurt him, and does not stay.

How to use it

  1. 1

Choose a genre and an ending: happy, bittersweet, tragic, ironic or open.

  2. 2

Press New storyline, then tap any beat you like to lock it.

  3. 3

Reroll the unlocked beats until the five read as one story.

  4. 4

Copy the storyline, or turn it into a logline and test it on a friend.

What is a storyline?

A storyline is the shortest complete version of a story: a character, a goal, the opposition, a change and a resolution. It is longer than a logline, which only sets up the conflict, and much shorter than a synopsis or an outline, which walk through the events scene by scene.

Writers use a storyline to test whether an idea has a shape before they spend weeks on it. If you cannot say what changes in the middle and how it ends, the idea is still a situation, not a story.

How is this different from the plot generator?

The plot generator builds a premise: a protagonist with a flaw, a goal, an antagonist, a setting and an inciting incident, tuned for features, pilots or shorts. It answers the question of where a story starts.

The storyline generator answers where it goes. It always gives you a turn and an ending, and it lets you choose the emotional shape of that ending first. Use the plot generator to find the world, then the storyline generator to find the arc.

Why choose the ending first?

Because the ending decides what the story means. The same nurse who wants to save her family home tells a different story if she wins and loses her sister, wins and finds the house was never the point, or loses everything and keeps her integrity. Picking the ending type first keeps the turn and the resolution pulling in the same direction.

Bittersweet endings, where the hero gets the goal but pays for it, are common in drama and awards films. Ironic endings suit thrillers and dark comedies. Open endings suit stories about a choice rather than an outcome.

Is this an AI story generator?

No, and that is on purpose. Most AI story generators write a whole story for you. This story generator gives you the five beats a story needs and leaves the writing to you, from tables written by hand, so the result is a starting shape you can bend rather than a draft you have to undo.

If you want an AI to work from your own idea, the logline generator and the synopsis generator take your premise and write back. Use this page first when you have no idea yet.

How do you turn a storyline into a script?

Expand each beat into an act. The protagonist and want become your setup, the obstacle drives the long middle, the turn is your midpoint or your second act break, and the ending is your climax and final image.

Then write the logline, rough out the beats with a beat sheet, and draft the scenes in order. A storyline is a promise to yourself about where the story lands, so you can wander in the middle without getting lost.

Questions writers ask

Is this storyline generator random?

The picks are random within the genre and ending you choose, from tables written by hand for this page. The same settings and seed always give the same storyline, so a shared link rebuilds it exactly.

Can I keep part of a storyline and change the rest?

Yes. Tap a beat to lock it, then press Reroll the unlocked parts. Locks survive in the share link too.

What is the difference between a storyline and a plot?

A plot is every event in order. A storyline is the shape underneath: who, what they want, what blocks them, what turns and how it ends.

Does the storyline maker use AI?

No. Every beat was written by a person and the generator runs in your browser. Nothing is stored and there is no signup.

Is this a free AI story generator?

It is a free story generator, but it does not use AI. It picks a protagonist, a want, an obstacle, a turn and an ending from hand written tables for your genre, so it is instant and has no daily limit.

Can a story generator write the whole story for me?

This one gives you the spine, not the prose. Five beats are enough to start an outline or a first draft, and the choices that make it your story stay with you.

Can I use a generated storyline for my own book or film?

Yes, it is free to use. Change the details until the people and places feel like yours.
