Random Character Generator for Writers
A random character generator for writers. Each roll gives you a name, an age, a job, three personality traits, a want, a need, a flaw and a secret. Switch to Traits only and it works as a character trait generator: personality traits, strengths, flaws and quirks in one roll.

Why want, need, flaw and secret?
Those four are what make a character drive a story. The want is the goal they chase on screen. The need is what they actually have to learn, and it usually pulls against the want. The flaw is what keeps them from getting either, and the secret is the thing that, once it comes out, changes how everyone sees them.
Random pairings are the point. A funeral director who wants to be famous for one thing and needs to slow down is already a premise. If a combination makes you laugh or wince, that is the one to keep.
How does the character trait generator work?
Traits only mode is a personality generator for when you already have the person and need the texture. Each roll gives five personality traits, two strengths, two flaws and two quirks, all written by hand and picked at random in your browser.
Look for the pair that pulls against each other: a strength and a flaw that come from the same place, or a quirk that gives away what a trait hides. That tension is what an actor can play.
How do I turn a random character into a real one?
Ask why. Why that job, why that secret, who would be hurt if it came out. Write one scene where the want and the flaw collide, and you will know quickly whether the character has a story in them.
Then move to the character profile template or the backstory generator to fill in history, voice and relationships. The name can always change later.

Questions writers ask
Is the random character generator free?
Yes. No signup, no limit, and it runs in your browser.
Where do the names come from?
From the same US Social Security first name lists and census surnames the character name generator uses, so they sound like real people.
Does it use AI?
No. Every job, want, need, flaw and secret was written by hand, and the tool picks from those lists at random.
Can I use these characters in my own story?
Yes. They are yours to use and change however you like.
Is there a character trait generator or personality generator mode?
Yes. Choose Traits only above and every roll gives five personality traits, two strengths, two flaws and two quirks. Full character mode adds a name, a job, a want, a need and a secret.
