- 1
Paste your logline or a few sentences about the story, the main character and the tone.

Add a genre if you have one. It changes the style of title you get back.
- 3
Copy the titles you like, then search each one before you commit to it.
What kinds of titles work?
| Style | How it works | Classic example |
|---|---|---|
| Character | Names the person the story is about | Erin Brockovich (2000) |
| Place | Names the world | Chinatown (1974) |
| Hook | States the premise outright | Snakes on a Plane (2006) |
| Phrase | A line with a double meaning | Get Out (2017) |
| Object | A thing that carries the theme | Jaws (1975) |
What makes a good screenplay title?
Short beats long. Most memorable titles are one to four words. The title should match the genre: a horror title that sounds like a romantic comedy sets up the wrong expectations before anyone reads a page.
It also has to be findable. Search your favourite before you fall for it. Titles cannot be copyrighted, so a match with an obscure film is not a legal problem, but sharing a title with a famous one will confuse every reader and every search engine.
How does the title generator work?
It reads your description and writes eight titles across different styles, from literal to poetic, with a short reason for each. It is told to avoid the titles of famous existing films, but check anyway. Think of the list as a brainstorm partner. Writers often end up with a ninth title that two of the suggestions pointed toward.
How does the story title and story name generator work?
Story title mode is for when you want a quick spark rather than a title built from your premise. Pick a genre and it combines hand picked words for that genre in the shapes titles often take: The Silent Witness, The Crown of the Salt Road, What the Lodger Knew. It works for short stories, novels and scripts alike.
Treat the list as raw material. Swap one word for something from your own story and a generic title often becomes a specific one.
When should I settle on a title?
Whenever it helps you write. A working title is fine for a first draft. The title matters most when the script goes out, because it is the first line of your query, your contest entry and your logline pitch.
Questions writers ask
Is there a story title generator that does not need my premise?
Yes. Switch to Story and novel titles (instant) above, pick a genre and get twelve titles at once. It runs in your browser, uses no AI and has no daily limit.
Does it work as a story name generator for novels and short stories?
Yes. The story and novel mode uses the same genre word lists for any kind of story, so the names fit a novel, a short story or a script equally well.
How do I come up with a title for my screenplay?
Start from your hook, your main character or your world, keep it short and genre appropriate, and search it before you commit. The generator gives you eight starting points.
Is this a movie name generator too?
Yes. Movie name and movie title mean the same thing here. Describe the film and you get eight names for it, built from your premise rather than pulled from a list.
Can two movies have the same title?
Yes. Titles cannot be copyrighted in the US. It is still wise to avoid the title of a well known film.
How long should a movie title be?
Usually one to four words. Long titles can work, but they need to earn it.
Is the screenplay title generator free?
Yes. No signup, up to 15 AI runs a day.
