Free Screenwriting Software: Best Options

The best free screenwriting software formats as you type, exports a clean PDF, and saves in a format other apps can open, such as Fountain or Final Draft FDX. Free options include ScriptLix Studio in the browser, Trelby on the desktop, and the free tiers or demos of paid apps. Here is what matters and how they compare.

How do the free options compare?

Plans and prices change, so treat these as notes at time of writing, October 2026, and check each site before you buy. ScriptLix is not affiliated with any of these apps.

How to use it

  1. 1

Decide where you write: a browser on any device, or a desktop app on one machine.

  2. 2

Check the exits: PDF for readers, FDX for producers who use Final Draft, Fountain as a plain text backup.

  3. 3

Write ten pages in your top pick before you commit. Formatting feel matters more than feature lists.

What should free screenwriting software do?

Format the page for you. Tab and Enter should move between scene heading, action, character, parenthetical, dialogue and transition, with the margins and Courier 12 point readers expect. If you have to fix indents by hand, it is a word processor, not screenwriting software.

Export a PDF that looks like a real script, with a proper title page and about one page per minute of screen time. That PDF is what managers, contests and coverage services read.

Let you leave. A free app that only saves in its own format can hold your script hostage. Fountain is plain text any app can read, and FDX is the Final Draft file most of the industry trades in.

Which features matter less than they look?

Index cards, beat boards and colour coded outlines are nice, and some writers swear by them. Many working writers outline on paper or in a plain document. Production features like locked scene numbers and coloured revision pages matter once a script is going into production, not while you are writing a spec.

Real time collaboration matters a lot if you write with a partner, and not at all if you write alone. Decide which you are before you weigh it.

Is ScriptLix Studio really free?

Writing, importing and exporting are free, with no account needed to start. Your scripts are stored in your browser and the editor works offline once loaded. If you sign in, your scripts sync to your account. Studio opens Fountain, FDX, text and Markdown files, and saves Fountain, FDX and PDF through the print dialog.

The optional AI helper, Script Buddy, runs on credits, and you can bring your own DeepSeek key instead. You never need it to write. Studio does not yet do real time co editing or dual dialogue; share links with comments are there.

What about writing in Word or Google Docs?

It works with a template, and plenty of first scripts were written that way. The cost is time: you set every element by hand, page breaks drift, and you cannot send an FDX. Our free screenplay template for Docs, Word and Pages takes most of the pain out if you want to stay there.

Questions writers ask

What is the best free screenwriting software?

The one that formats as you type, exports a clean PDF and saves to Fountain or FDX. For a browser app with no account, try ScriptLix Studio. For an open source desktop app, Trelby. Paid apps like Fade In and Final Draft offer demos or trials.

Is there free screenwriting software with FDX export?

Yes. ScriptLix Studio imports and exports FDX for free. Some paid apps also export FDX from their free tiers or demos, with limits that change, so check before you rely on it.

Can I write a screenplay on my phone?

Yes. ScriptLix Studio has a phone layout with an element bar, and runs in the mobile browser. Longer drafts are still easier on a keyboard.

Do professional screenwriters use free software?

Some do, especially Fountain based tools. Many use Final Draft because studios and shows use it, which is why FDX export matters even if you write elsewhere.

What file format should I save my screenplay in?

Keep a PDF for readers, plus an FDX or Fountain copy you can edit in another app. Fountain is plain text, so it opens anywhere, forever.
