Villain Name Generator: Names by Menace Style

- 3
Lock the names that fit, reroll the rest, then star, copy or share the list.
What makes a good villain name?
The name is the first thing the audience learns about the threat. A Baroness with an old family name promises cold manners and old money. A monster called The Underneath promises something you never fully see. A corporate villain called Director Margin is funny until he fires the town. Pick the kind of menace first, then the name.
Sound does a lot of the work. Hard consonants and hissing sibilants read as dangerous. A soft, ordinary name can be scarier still, because it does not warn anyone.
How do the menace styles differ?
Aristocratic villains get noble titles and house names. Monstrous ones are named for appetite and anatomy. Corporate villains sound like a line on a balance sheet. Cult leaders take family words like Mother and Brother, which is exactly what makes them unsettling. Masterminds get academic titles and abstract nouns.
This tool shares its engine with the superhero name generator, so heroes and villains in one story can come from the same word banks and still sound like opposites.
How should a villain’s name fit the protagonist?
Build the antagonist as the protagonist’s opposite, and let the names echo that. A plain spoken hero against an ornate villain, or a hero with a borrowed codename against a villain who uses the name they were born with. Our guide to protagonist vs antagonist covers how to set the two against each other.
Will it give me a famous villain’s name?
No. Every generated name is checked against a list of well known villains from comics, film, books and games, and any match is thrown away before you see it. No list covers everything, so search a name before you publish.
