What makes a good writing prompt?

A good prompt hands you a situation, not a topic. Write about loss is a topic and leaves you staring at the page. A man returns a library book thirty years overdue to the woman who lent it to him is a situation: there is a person, a want and a moment of pressure, so the scene starts itself.

The prompts on this page all carry a small problem or an odd rule. That friction gives you somewhere to go in the first sentence, and it is the same thing that makes a scene work in a finished story or script.

How are these different from screenwriting prompts?

The screenwriting prompts page is built for scripts: scene exercises, dialogue drills, character work and a 30 day short film challenge. This page is wider. It covers short stories, flash fiction and worldbuilding as well as short films, so it works for any writer, and the short film prompts are written so they can be shot.

If you write for the screen, use both. Start a story here, then take the scene that matters most and rewrite it as a screenplay page.

Are these good writing prompts for adults?

Yes. They were written with adult writers in mind: grief, work, marriage, money, ageing, faith and family turn up as often as ghosts and dragons. Many work for confident teenage writers too, but none of them are pitched at a school classroom.

The From your life prompts are the most personal. They ask you to start with a real memory and then hand it to a character, which is how a lot of fiction actually begins.

How do you build a daily writing habit with prompts?

Keep the session short and the start automatic. Same time, same place, one prompt, ten minutes. The prompt removes the decision about what to write, which is the part that kills most habits before the first word.

Do not judge the pages for a week. Then reread them and look for the one idea you keep circling back to. That is usually the story you actually want to write.

Questions writers ask

What are good creative writing prompts?

Prompts that give you a person in a specific situation with a problem, like the ones on this page. They make the first sentence easy, because something is already happening.

Is there a writing prompts generator here?

Yes. Press Random prompt to pull one from the filtered list, then share the link to that exact prompt. It runs in your browser with no signup and no limit.

Do you have fantasy, romance and horror writing prompts?

Yes. Filter by genre to see only fantasy writing prompts, romance writing prompts, horror, sci-fi, mystery, thriller, comedy, drama or western prompts.

Can I publish a story I wrote from one of these prompts?

Yes. The prompts were written for this page and are free to use. The story you write is yours.

How long should I write for each prompt?

Ten to twenty minutes is enough for a first pass. Flash fiction prompts give a word count; for the rest, stop when the timer ends and keep the best line.
