Town Name Generator: City and Fantasy Town Names
A town name generator gives you a place that sounds lived in. This one builds English, American frontier, coastal, fantasy and modern city names from real naming patterns, and can add a one line description for each. Its Modern city style makes it a city name generator too, and it flags real places.

How are real sounding town names built?
English place names are mostly two parts: a root and an ending that once meant something. A ton was a farmstead, a ford a river crossing, a bury a fortified place, a wick a trading settlement, a ham a home, a by a village. Put a root in front and you get names that feel a thousand years old. The generator uses those same endings with its own roots.
American frontier towns were named after founders, forts, water and hope: something ville, Fort somebody, a creek, a gulch, a springs. Coastal towns name the harbor and the catch. Fantasy towns lean on evocative compounds and on the syllable models from the fantasy name generator.
Why are some names marked real place?
Because some of them are. Combine common roots and endings and you will land on real towns like Hartford or Stanton. Rather than hide them, the generator marks them, using the US Census Bureau’s 2020 Gazetteer of incorporated cities and towns and the ONS list of major towns and cities in England and Wales. A real name can be useful for a grounded story, or a reason to keep rolling.
What makes fantasy town names work?
Name places for what people saw or did there. Emberfall, Ravenhold and Frostmere tell a traveler what to expect, the way real names once did. Keep a region consistent: if the north speaks with hard stops, its towns should too.
Mix a few old, worn down names in with the descriptive ones. Real maps are full of names whose meaning was lost centuries ago, and a fantasy map that explains every name feels new.
How do you name a modern city?
Modern city names in the US often come from a founder or landowner, a feature of the land, or a hopeful prefix like New, Mount or Lake. Suffixes such as Heights, Falls, Springs and Junction tell you how the place began: a hill, a waterfall, a spa, a railroad crossing. The Modern city style combines those patterns with its own list of roots.
For a fictional city that has to carry a whole story, think about what it sells and what it hides. A river port, a college town and a rust belt city each suggest different jobs, accents and secrets before a single scene is written.
How do you name a place so it fits the story?
Decide what the town is for in your plot. A town that traps your hero wants a name that sounds pleasant and closed. A frontier boom town wants a name full of hope that the story can rot. Use the description line as a starting point for its economy, its secret and the reason your characters cannot just leave.

Questions writers ask
Is this a city name generator too?
Yes. Pick the Modern city style for names like New Harlow or Calder Heights, and set the size to City. The fantasy style builds names that suit a capital or a river city.
Can it make fantasy town names?
Yes. The Fantasy style builds compound names like Emberfall and names from the fantasy name generator’s syllable models, some with Hold, Keep or Gate.
What does the one line description do?
It gives each place a kind, a thing it is known for and sometimes a secret, like a river town known for its salt markets. The line stays with the name when you lock it.
Will it give me a real town name?
Sometimes, and it tells you. Names that match a real US city or town, or a major town in England and Wales, are marked Real place.
Can I keep a town name and reroll the rest?
Yes. Lock any name and it stays while the others change. Star names to save them on this device, or share a link to your list.
