How do you come up with a horror story idea?
Start with a fear that is personal, then give it a body. Grief, guilt, a new baby, a parent losing their memory: the best horror ideas wrap a real anxiety in a monster, a place or a rule. Then find the situation that traps a character with it, somewhere they cannot simply leave.
The generator works the same way. It pairs a specific person with a goal and a threat, then adds the moment it starts and a turn halfway through. Treat the result as a first draft of a premise, not a finished idea, and change whatever does not ring true.
What makes a horror premise scary rather than just strange?
Stakes the audience feels, and rules they can learn. A ghost that can do anything at any time is less frightening than one that can only move when the lights are off, because the audience starts watching the lights. Give the threat a pattern, then break it at the worst possible moment.
Make the hero want something that keeps them in danger: a house they cannot afford to lose, a child they will not leave, a truth they need to uncover.
Where can I find good horror story ideas?
Scroll to the 56 horror story ideas under the generator. Each has a title and a premise, filterable by subgenre, so you can jump straight to slasher, folk or cosmic horror. For a fresh combination, roll the generator instead and lock the parts you like. For finished film premises tagged by budget, see the 52 horror movie ideas page.
The scariest movie ideas tend to be small and specific: one place, one rule, one person who cannot leave. That also makes them cheaper to shoot.
Which horror subgenre should I write?
Write the one that suits your budget and your obsession. Contained supernatural and psychological stories can work with a small cast and one location. Found footage can be shot cheaply but needs a convincing reason for every frame to exist. Cosmic and body horror often lean on effects, so plan for them early.
Where can I find horror writing prompts?
The screenwriting prompts tool has a horror filter with scene, character, dialogue and what if prompts, and the story starters generator has horror opening lines for scripts and prose. Prompts are smaller than premises: a single scene or image to write toward.
Can I use these horror ideas in my own story?
Yes. Every idea and table row here was written for this page and is free to use, adapt or ignore. Ideas are not protected the way finished scripts are, so what will make the story yours is the execution.
Questions writers ask
What is a horror plot generator?
A tool that combines hand written story parts, such as a protagonist, a threat, a setting and a twist, into a full horror premise you can develop.
Is this horror story generator AI?
No. It combines rows from hand written tables, so every premise comes back the same from the same link and costs nothing to run.
What are the main horror subgenres?
Common ones include supernatural, slasher, folk, body, cosmic, psychological and found footage horror. Many films mix two or more.
What are some good scary movie ideas?
Look for a personal fear with a clear rule and a trapped hero, like the 56 original horror story ideas on this page, which you can filter by subgenre.
How do I make a horror idea original?
Tie the fear to something specific in your protagonist’s life, set it somewhere you know well, and give the threat rules that the story uses in a new way.
How long should a horror screenplay be?
There is no fixed rule. Features generally run about 90 to 120 pages, and horror often sits toward the shorter end because tension is hard to sustain.
