Podcast Script Template and How to Write One
To write a podcast script, break the episode into blocks: a hook and intro, two or three segments, ad reads and an outro. Write the lines each host will say, or bullet points if you improvise, and time it as you go. This free template builds the script and estimates the running time from your word count.

How to use it
- 1
Write a one line hook: the question or promise that opens the episode.
- 2
Add an intro with the show name, the hosts and what this episode covers.
- 3
Plan two or three segments, each with one clear point, and write the host lines.
- 4
Place ad reads where the energy naturally dips, usually between segments.
- 5
Close with an outro: a recap, one call to action and when the next episode lands.
- 6
Check the estimated running time, then read it aloud once and adjust the pace setting.
Do you need a script for a podcast?
Not word for word, but you need a plan. Interview and chat shows usually work from a run of show: the segments, the questions and the timings, with the intro, ad reads and outro written out in full. Narrative and solo shows are often fully scripted, because every sentence has to carry the story.
A good rule is to script the parts that must be exact, such as the opening hook, sponsor reads and the call to action, and outline the rest.
How do you make a podcast script sound natural?
Write for the ear. Use short sentences, contractions and the words you actually say. Read every line aloud before you record, and rewrite anything you trip over. Leave room for the co host to react, and mark places where you plan to go off script.
Give each segment one point. Listeners cannot skim back the way readers can, so repeat the key idea once in different words before you move on.
How long should a podcast script be?
That depends on the episode length you are aiming for and how fast you speak. The template counts words and divides by a speaking pace you choose, which is only an estimate. To set your own pace, read one segment aloud for exactly one minute and count the words.
How do you write a podcast ad read?
Keep it short, specific and in the host’s own voice. Say who the sponsor is, one reason it is useful to this audience, and exactly what the listener should do, such as a code or a web address. Many shows place one ad near the start and one in the middle.

It depends on your pace. Multiply your words per minute by 30: at an estimated 150 words a minute that is about 4,500 words. Time yourself to get your real pace.
Should a podcast be fully scripted?
Narrative and solo shows often are. Interview and conversation shows usually script the intro, ads and outro and outline the rest.
