Logline Generator and Grader

A logline is one sentence that sells your story: who the hero is, what they want, what stands in the way, and what they lose if they fail. Describe your story and this free logline generator writes four versions, or paste your own and get it graded on protagonist, goal, stakes and irony.

In short

A logline is one sentence naming the hero, their goal, what stands in the way and what they stand to lose. Describe your story to get four loglines, or paste your own to have it scored on protagonist, goal, stakes and irony with one rewrite.

Written by AI, so treat it as a first draft. Free, no signup, up to 15 runs a day. We do not keep what you type.

How to use it

  1. 1

Write a few sentences about your story, or switch to Grade my logline and paste one you have.

  2. 2

Get four loglines from different angles, or a score out of 10 on each of the four parts plus one rewrite.

  3. 3

Copy the one you like and keep tightening it. The best loglines usually end up between 25 and 45 words.

How do you write a logline?

Start with the character, described by what makes them interesting rather than their name. Add the event that kicks off the story, the goal it forces on them, and the thing standing in the way. End on the stakes. One sentence, present tense, no questions, and no twists given away.

The fourth ingredient is irony, the gap between who the hero is and what the story asks of them. A shy accountant forced to lead a heist. A nurse who has to save a killer. That gap is usually what makes someone ask to read the script.

How is the logline graded?

The grader scores each of the four parts from 1 to 10 and says, in a line or two, what is working and what is missing. A logline that names a type of person instead of a specific one, or a goal nobody can picture, scores low on purpose. The rewrite keeps your story and only sharpens how it is told.

Treat the score as a reader’s first impression, not a verdict. If two parts score low, fix those first. They are usually the reason a logline feels flat.

Is it safe to paste my idea?

We do not store what you type. Your text goes to the AI model to write the answer and is not saved by us or used to train anything on our side. Ideas are rarely the risky part anyway. The execution, which is the script, is what gets sold.

What does a good logline look like in each genre?

Thriller: when a court interpreter realizes a defendant is sending threats to a witness through her translations, she must expose him without being thrown off the case or becoming his next target. The irony is that the hero carries the villain’s every word.

Comedy: a mild accountant mistaken for a famous motivational speaker has one weekend to bluff his way through a sold out retreat before the real speaker arrives. Drama: a retired boxer running his late wife’s flower shop must win back the regulars before the landlord sells, while learning the business she never let him touch.

What are the most common logline mistakes?

Naming the hero instead of describing them is the first. JOHN SMITH tells a reader nothing; a disgraced surgeon teaching first aid tells them a story. The second is vague stakes: everything will change, or nothing will ever be the same. Say what will be lost.

The third is a theme instead of a plot, such as a story about forgiveness. The fourth is length. If it needs three sentences and a semicolon, the story probably has not found its spine yet.

Should you write the logline before the script?

It helps. A logline written first is a test of the premise: if you cannot name the hero, the goal and the obstacle, the script will wander. It also gives you a sentence to pitch to friends and see whether their eyes light up.

Rewrite it after the draft. The finished script often has a sharper hook than the one you started with, and the logline that goes on a query letter should describe the script you actually wrote.

Questions writers ask

What is a logline generator?

A tool that turns a short description of your story into one sentence loglines. This one writes four options and can also grade a logline you already have.

How long should a logline be?

One sentence, usually 25 to 45 words. If it needs two sentences or a semicolon, there is probably a clearer version hiding inside it.

What makes a good logline?

A specific protagonist, a clear goal, an obstacle, real stakes, and some irony that makes the premise feel fresh.

Is the logline generator free?

Yes. No signup, up to 15 AI runs a day. If it is busy, try again later or tomorrow.

Should a logline include the ending?

No. A logline sets up the story and the stakes. The synopsis is where the ending goes.

Should a logline include the character’s name?

Usually not. Describe the protagonist with a telling detail instead, unless the character is a real or famous person the reader will recognize.

Can a logline be two sentences?

Yes, if the second sentence earns its place, but one is the norm. Aim for something you can say in a single breath.

What is irony in a logline?

A built in contradiction between the hero and the situation, like a fear of water for a lifeguard. It makes a premise feel like a story rather than a situation.
