What she finds is her sister's apartment packed for a trip no one took, and a leather bound ledger dating back to 1843 tracking which bloodline owes the next offering to the thing that lives in the woods behind the church. The pastor knows. The sheriff knows. Everyone in town is counting the days until the debt is collected, and Nora is the only person alive who did not grow up learning how the ceremony works.

A woman arrives in her dead sister's Appalachian town to collect her things and finds a ledger in the church basement listing every family that owes a sacrifice to the forest. Her sister's name is crossed out. Hers is next.
