COLD SIGNAL
Dr. Aisha Webb, eight years removed from the deep space program, is called back when a probe she helped design begins transmitting an anomalous signal from twenty-two light-years away. The signal contains the voiceprint of her former colleague, Dr. Priya Yun, who died in 2037. Working alongside junior engineer Jun Matsui, she decodes the signal and discovers a scientific correction to an error she made in 2033. At the bottom of the correction, a personal note: Priya was telling her she was wrong, and that she was forgiven.
In 2041, a deep-space probe launched in 2019 begins transmitting a signal on a dormant channel that has not been active in seventeen years. When signals engineer Dr. Aisha Webb is brought in to decode it, she recognizes the voiceprint in the signal's audio layer immediately. It belongs to her former colleague, Dr. Priya Yun, who died in 2037. She does not report this. She begins to work.
