Nora Calloway drives to Harrow Creek, West Virginia expecting a funeral and a few boxes. What she finds is her sister's apartment packed for a trip no one took, and a leather bound ledger dating back to 1843 tracking which bloodline owes the next offering to the thing that lives in the woods behind the church. The pastor knows. The sheriff knows. Everyone in town is counting the days until the debt is collected, and Nora is the only person alive who did not grow up learning how the ceremony works.
