James Halvorsen has been teaching American history at Millwood High School for eighteen years and has been keeping a private record of every Millwood graduate who enlisted in the United States military since 2013. When a former student is denied his GI Bill educational benefit on a paperwork technicality the recruiter never mentioned, Halvorsen begins sharing his record with families. Sergeant First Class Ryan Carter, the recruiter, recognizes Halvorsen at a diner one night and realizes that twenty two years earlier, they were on the same convoy outside Tikrit. The American Legion calls for Halvorsen's resignation. The school board holds a hearing. The film closes with two veterans, alone in a parking lot, finally talking the way they should have been talking from the beginning.

Mr. Halvorsen served in Desert Storm and has been teaching American history at Millwood High School for eighteen years. The Army recruiters who set up tables in his cafeteria are not exactly lying to his students. They are simply leaving out everything that matters. When Danny Reyes comes home in a wheelchair, his college fund vaporized by bureaucratic fine print, Halvorsen begins documenting what he sees and sharing it with parents. The American Legion calls for his resignation. The school board holds a hearing. The only people who show up to defend him are the students who have not yet been recruited, his wife, and the recruiter himself, who twenty two years ago was the kid Halvorsen watched pull a wounded soldier from a burning Bradley outside Tikrit.
