EMPTY FILE

Nola Vane, a forensic archivist hired to process the estate of deceased psychiatrist Dr. Eleanor Marsh, begins recognizing phrases she uses, childhood memories she believes are hers, and her own recurring dream in the patient files. Marsh treated Nola as a nine-year-old child. Nola has no memory of this. The files have been arranged in the exact order Nola would have arranged them. The last file has her name on it. It is almost empty. One sentence. In Marsh's handwriting. Written two years before Marsh died. Waiting.

THE KIND ONES

Callum Ridge arrives in Heron, Oregon to settle his grandmother's estate and expects to leave in three days. Instead he finds a town so free from suffering that the mortality statistics are impossible, a root cellar room with ceramic dishes eaten clean by something that has been there longer than the house, and forty-three entries in his grandmother's commonplace book recording thirty-one years of weekly feedings. His grandmother's neighbor explains: four generations ago, a covenant was made with something that absorbs grief and illness in exchange for being fed and left in peace. When Callum tries to confront and end the covenant, it shows him his mother as she was when he was seven. He cannot destroy the thing offering this. Instead, he does the one thing every keeper before him refused to do. He documents everything. He reads the record aloud to the room. The covenant ends. The town begins to feel what was held back.
