FADE IN:
A NOTE ON LANGUAGE
Dialogue is rendered in English throughout. Characters speak
German and Russian as indicated by context. Parenthetical
notes mark language switches where dramatically relevant. All
dialogue between Katrin and Morozov occurs in English, their
shared professional language. Katrin speaks German with Lena
and other BND personnel. Morozov occasionally lapses into
Russian during moments of emotional exposure, rendered in
English with parenthetical notation.
EXT. DANUBE EMBANKMENT, VIENNA. PRE DAWN.
Grey water. Grey sky. The Danube moves through Vienna the
way it has for centuries, unconcerned with anything happening
on its banks.
A MAN walks the embankment path. COLONEL ARKADY MOROZOV,
56, heavyset, wearing a wool overcoat that was expensive a
decade ago. He carries a worn leather satchel close to his
body.
He passes the EMBASSY OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION. Does not
look at it. Does not slow.
Three blocks further. The American Embassy. Lit from within.
Morozov slows. Stops. His right thumb presses against his
left palm. He turns away and keeps walking.
Two more blocks. The German Embassy. Quieter. Limestone
facade.
Morozov stops. Forty seconds pass. A security guard inside
the lobby notices him through the glass.
He adjusts his coat. Crosses the street. Pushes through
the embassy door.
The embankment behind him is empty. The river continues.
INT. BND VIENNA STATION. MORNING.
Fluorescent light. Government carpet. The Vienna Station
occupies three floors of an office building that could house
an insurance company.
