BONE CHAPEL

Nora Kim, a meticulous archival preservationist, arrives at the Hale family property in rural Vermont for a routine three-day assignment: catalogue the private cemetery before the estate sale closes. She finds the first anomaly within hours: an 1891 grave with freshly disturbed soil. The caretaker, Elias Hale, confirms a burial occurred three days ago and offers explanations that are technically accurate and structurally wrong. When a county deputy arrives and proves to have her own history with the property, Nora begins to understand that the official record she was hired to certify is a secondary document. The primary record is in the chapel, behind the altar, in a ledger that has been maintained for one hundred and thirty-nine years. The night Nora reads it completely, the gate is locked and her car will not start. Elias explains the arrangement. Nora escapes with the primary ledger.
