Marco Reyes, fourteen, arrives at his grandparents' Torrance County property in June carrying a failed physics test whose red X marks a correct answer. With his grandfather Ernesto, a retired Sandia antenna engineer navigating early Parkinson's, he salvages and constructs a working hydrogen-line radio telescope over the summer. When the dish detects a faint, repeating signal at the predicted sky position, Marco and Ernesto pursue its identification through academic correspondence and GPS-disciplined timing analysis. A July monsoon destroys the primary mount. Marco rebuilds alone. By August, the source is identified as a binary millisecond pulsar matching Marco's original prediction. In the closing scene, the two of them sit in folding chairs facing the dish in the dark, and Marco describes what is there to a grandfather who can no longer see it clearly enough to read the sky himself.

After his parents separate, fourteen-year-old Marco Reyes spends the summer at his grandparents' rural New Mexico property with a physics test he knows is wrong and the idea of building a radio telescope to prove it. His grandfather Ernesto, a retired RF engineer with early Parkinson's, works alongside him without taking over. By August they have built something that works.
